MOHALI: The police on Monday arrested a man on charges of extortion and using objectionable words against a woman on social media.

The police on Monday arrested a man on charges of extortion and using objectionable words against a woman on social media. According to the police, the accused has been identified as Leeladhar Taapriya (35), a native of Bikaner, Rajasthan.

Narinder Sood, Additional SHO, Phase XI police station, said on the complaint of Gunpreet Kaur, a Sector 66 resident, a case was registered under Sections 385, 387, 389, 506 and 509, IPC. The accused threatened the victim, who worked as a director at a firm specialising in social media outreach for political parties, by posting lewd comments on her photo on Twitter and allegedly blackmailed her demanding money. The police said the accused allegedly made threat calls to another employee of the same firm and it was being investigated if he had any accomplice. The accused was held from Bikaner and sent to remand till April 19. — TNS
