Chandigarh, April 21

A Sector 38 resident was sentenced to six-year imprisonment in a two-year-old case wherein he was arrested with two kg of ganja. He has also been directed to pay Rs 50,000 by court. In a separate case, a Sector 20 resident was sentenced to six months’ jail for possessing 26 gm of heroin.

The Sector 38 resident, Tilak Raj, was arrested by the police on September 23, 2016. As per the FIR, at about 7:45 pm, a person was seen coming from the forest area of Sector 39 where the police were on patrolling duty. On noticing the police, Tilak Raj changed his way. The police chased him on finding his activity suspicious and finally apprehended him. They recovered a packet from him which contained two kg of ganja. He failed to produce documents for the same and was thus arrested under the NDPS Act.

The other convict facing a six-month sentence is identified as Tony Sharma (27). As per the prosecution, Sharma was arrested by the Crime Branch of the city police in 2016 when 26 gm of heroin was recovered from him. The police team had laid a checkpoint in Sector 30 to curb crime in the city. Later, it noticed a man carrying a polythene bag in his hands. However, when he noticed the police party, he tried to change his way but was stopped. During the checking, 26 gm of heroin was found in his bag. He was arrested and a case under Section 21 of NDPS Act was registered against him.

Convict’s wife facing trial in drug case

Convict Tilak Raj’s wife is also facing trial in an NDPS case in the same court. She has been identified as Deepa and was present in the court when Tilak was sentenced. She, along with other family members, made a big scene outside the courtroom and had to be escorted away. As per information, Deepa’s case is in final stages and could be decided soon. — TNS
