Man jumps into Bhakra canal, dies

PATIALA:A retired government employee committed suicide by jumping into the Bhakra canal.

A retired government employee committed suicide by jumping into the Bhakra canal.

Sources said Kamaljit Singh, a resident of Rampur village, Bhawanigarh, jumped into the Bhakhra canal on Thursday morning.

Kamaljit was reportedly in depressed due to his deteriorating health since long. Sources said Kamaljit used to visit Gurdwara Parmeshar Dwar Sahib to pay obeisance in Patiala. But today, he went straight to the Bhakhra canal on the Nabha road and committed suicide, the police said.

The police found his scooter parked near the canal, with a slip on which his and his brother's name and contact information was written.

Station House Officer Harwinder Singh Cheema said, "We have started the investigation in the matter and handed over his scooter to the victim's family."

Kamaljit's body was recovered from near Boota Singh village with the help of divers on Thursday night. In the preliminary investigations, it was found that Kamaljit was depressed to his deteriorating health, the police said.
