There will be a keen contest between the Congress and SAD candidates in the Ward No. 10 of Municipal Council Sirhind-Fatehgarh Sahib during the civic elections which are scheduled to be held on February 24.

After the withdrawal of papers, two candidates — Gurpreet Singh Lalli, a close confidant of Congress MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra, and Sonia Markan of the SAD — are left

in the fray. Both candidates have started intensive campaigning and are hopeful to win the poll. It will be a litmus test for the Congress as the prestige of the MLA is at stake and the results may affect his prospects for the Cabinet birth for which he is considered a front runner.

Mandeep Kaur Nagra, wife of the MLA, is visiting door to door to convince voters to vote for the Congress and the MLA had also started meeting workers.

On the other hand, SAD workers are also making all-out efforts and hope to get sympathy votes as the seat fall vacant due to the death of an SAD councillor.

Hardial Singh Chatha, district election officer-cum-ADC, said the voting would be held on February 24 from 8 am to 4 pm and the counting of votes would start immediately after that.

He said all arrangements for the same had been completed.
