Mohali, July 7

Mohali police head constable Gurdas Singh allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the Ropar canal. The deceased had gone missing while on his way from his residence at Magrod village in Ropar to Mohali on July 1. His body was found from the canal in Patiala district, around 60 km away from Ropar.

His family members claimed that Gurdas Singh might have slipped into the canal. The police suspect it to be a suicide case.

According to the police, Gurdas Singh, who was posted at the Community Police Centre at Phase VIII, had left his residence at around 7 am on July 1, saying that he was leaving for Mohali to join his duty, but he never reached there. The family members claimed that Gurdas Singh had also asked for flour, which he intended to throw into the canal for fish.

“He may have slipped into the canal while throwing flour into it,” said Gurdial Singh, brother of the victim. The police said Gurdas’ body was found in the canal in Patiala district after five days.

“We are also looking into the suicide angle,” said the police. The Ropar police also contacted their counterparts in Mohali to get any clue.

Mohali SSP GS Bhullar said the Ropar police were investigating the case. “As Gurdas Singh was posted in Mohali, we are also probing the matter at our end,” said the SSP. Ropar SSP Varinder Pal Singh said the deceased’s family did not suspect any foul play and the police had initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.
