Model UN event ends

Chandigarh: A two-day model United Nations event ended at Hansraj Public School. As many 180 delegates, representing 135 nations from various schools, participated in the event, which was jointly organised with a club of students at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. Besides regular committees of the UN, a new committee, namely AIPPM (All India Political Party Meet), was also added to the event.

Declamation contest 

An inter-house declamation contest for Classes VII to X was held at Blue Bird High School, Panchkula. The little ones of Classes I to III expressed their awareness about healthy food by making a collage. Students from Class IV to VI showed their concern for wildlife by preparing posters and writing eye-catching slogans. 

SpellBee competition 

The British School, Mohali, organised a SpellBee competition for students of Classes V to X. Students actively participated in the contest. Jasmine Kaur of Class V, Saranaya Singh of Class VI, Devayush Das of Class VII, Vrinda of Class VIII, Jashnoor Sandhu of Class IX and Balkaran Singh Waraich of Class X were declared winners.

Poster making

To mark Biological Diversity Day, a poster-making competition was held at SD Senior Secondary School, Chandigarh, for Classes VI to IX. Posters were made conveying the message of conserve natural resources and protecting wild animals besides the flora and fauna for ecological stability. 

Jungle trail for students

To mark International Biodiversity Day, the Department of Forests and Wildlife, Chandigarh, along with an NGO, Yuvsatta, started a week-long biodiversity jungle trail for schoolchildren. Volunteers of the Yuvsatta took students of Government Girls’ Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 18-D, Chandigarh, to newly developed city forest behind Sukhna Lake. An environment expert Kulbhushan Kanwar and Pramod Sharma, coordinator of the Yuvsatta, accompanied students. Giving information about the initiative, Santosh Kumar, Chief Conservator of Forests, shared that every year people all around the world observed the day and were developing the city forest that had plenty of herbs and other medicinal plants. The forest track is an abode of a wide variety of mammals, birds, insects and organisms. Kulbhushan Kanwar  showed various types of trees to students. Chirping of the birds, falling of leaves from the dense trees and passing of animals created a perfect ambience for this jungle trail. TNS

Profs to present paper in Italy

Chandigarh: A research paper of Dr Jyoti Rattan, Associate Professor, Department of Laws, and Dr Vijay Rattan, Professor of Public Administration and Consultant to the United Nations, have been selected by the European Group for Public Administration (EGPA) for presentation at the 2017-EGPA Annual Conference, to be organised in close collaboration with Politecnico di Milano in Bovisa (Milan), Italy, from 30 August to September 1 2017. The paper titled “Role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in the Metamorphosis of Justice Administration in India: A Legal Study” will be presented by them.

Talk on stress management 

The Department of Life Long Learning and Extension, Panjab University, organised a talk on the theme of “Stress Management Among Adolescents”   at Government Senior Secondary School, Khuda Lahora, UT Chandigarh. As many as 42 adolescents attended the programme. More than 60 per cent of students reported that they often or always felt stress due to their school work and were worried about the grades, test, peer pressure  and acceptance in society. TNS 

UN Global Road Safety Week

Patiala: To enlighten students about the road safety rules, a seminar on UN Global Road Safety Week was organised at Bhupindra International Public School (BIPS), Patiala. The students talked about the significance of abiding by the traffic rules. Slogan making and painting competition on the theme 'Be Slow, Be Safe' were organised for junior and senior students. ASI Gurjaap Singh made the students aware about traffic rules and signs. He advised the students to be extra alert on the road. Principal Indu Sharma said the school envisioned to impart consciousness and consideration towards traffic and road safety rules among the students. The students took a pledge that they shall always abide by the traffic and road safety rules.

Poetry-recitation competition

Punjabi poetry-recitation competition was organised at Young Farmers Public High School, Bhadson, for Classes II to VII. Students participated earnestly in the competition. It inspired them to recite with confidence on stage. Principal Chanderdeep Grewal congratulated the winners and applauded all participants for their superb performance.

International Biodiversity Day

Police DAV Public School, Patiala, took an initiative to arrange a seminar on International Biodiversity Day. This seminar was conducted by the Department of Forest and Wildlife Preservation. A team from the department interacted with students on the burning issue of wildlife conservation. Jugraj Singh Rathor, Divisional Forest Officer, Forest Extension, Patiala, was the speaker in the seminar. An effective PPT on biodiversity and marking of "hot spots" across the world was shown. Children were made aware about the living organisms and their role in keeping ecological balance. A drawing and poster-making competition was conducted on wild life conservation. Certificates of honour and medals were awarded to the winners.

Career guidance centre

In order to provide proper guidance for the better future of youths, RIMT University, Mandi Gobindgarh, has established its permanent career guidance and counselling centre at Patiala. Inaugurating the centre, University Vice-Chancellor AS Chawla said unfortunately, there was no effective career guidance and counselling centre to identify the real talent of youths and give them right advice. He said, "If youths get the right path, they can not only build their better future, but a better country also." Chawla said the problem was not of identifying the talent of a youngster, but to know that if someone chose an area according to his talent and whether he or she would be able to get work in the area of interest after the completion of his studies.Chawla said a similar experiment was done on the RIMT University campus a few days ago in which about 300 youngsters had participated.
