A case of unfair practice against a principal of an affiliated college in Mukerian, Punjab, is being taken up in the PU’s Syndicate meeting tomorrow. Kawaljit Kaur, principal of SPN College, Mukerian, had written to the Vice-Chancellor that the management has not paid her full salary for almost two years and now kicked her out.

Kawaljit was earlier the principal in a college in Ludhiana and in August 2015 she decided to apply for the post of principal in SPN College. However, to her shock, the college management after appointment informed her that she would be paid only her basic pay i.e. Rs 37,400 as per a Punjab government notification.

The notification she claims has been misused as it is applicable to only new entrants in the field. The minimum experience required for the post of a principal is 15 years. However, Kawalijit had no other option and decided to wait for two years for full pay. Now after 22 months, the management has kicked her out without notice or valid reason, she claims.

The letter says that from time to time she was harassed by the management and recently an assistant professor was similarly kicked out without any valid reason. Kawaljit said, “From earning over Rs 1 lakh a month, I had to live with Rs 37,400 a month for almost two years. Now, I have no job or salary.” Kawaljit claims that she has been in touch with the VC about her salary issue and asked him to intervene and help her. She has also demanded that a committee be formed to keep a check against such malpractices as they are being adopted in other places as well. A copy of the letter had been e mailed by her to dean colleges as well.
