NIPER Registrar PJP Waraich suspended

The Registrar of the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Mohali, Wing Cdr PJP Singh Waraich (retd), has been placed under suspension. This was stated by a spokesperson here on Thursday.

“The Registrar of NIPER is kept under suspension till the outcome of the departmental proceedings on certain charges,” an official release stated.

Prof Prabha Garg has been appointed as the officiating Registrar of the institute till further orders. She will be the first woman Registrar of NIPER ever since its inception over two decades ago.

Though the details of the charges and complaints made against Waraich were not ascertained, sources said there were multiple complaints against him, on the basis of which, he has been placed under suspension and a chargesheet has been served upon him.

In February, 2016, the CBI had also booked Waraich, along with NIPER’s then officiating Director Prof KK Bhutani, former director Prof P Rama Rao, then officiating registrar Rajesh Moza, then section officer Hardeep Singh, then deputy registrar and professor Dr Saranjit Singh on the charges of corruption, cheating, forgery, criminal breach of trust and criminal conspiracy in a multi-crore scam. Several officials of the Union Government were also allegedly involved in the case.

A case under Sections 120-B, 420, 409, 467 and 471 of the IPC and Section 13 (2) read with Sections 13 (1) (c) and 1 (1) (d) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, was registered against them.
