No check on stray cattle

Stray cattle roam on a road in Sector 4, Panchkula, on Wednesday. Ravi Kumar

This refers to the news report, “Stray cattle claim biker’s life in Mohali” (Chandigarh Tribune, April 18). Stray cattle menace in and around Chandigarh is a nuisance. The authorities concerned have failed to check the menace. Cows can be seen roaming on streets, roads, markets and parks with impunity. The death of a biker and his wife being injured on Tuesday in Mohali is certainly sad. Several people have lost their lives in the tricity due to such accidents. Even I had met with such an accident as my scooter had rammed into a stray cow that had suddenly appeared on the road dividing Sectors 33 and 45 in the year 1976. I had received serious injuries on my face. There is still a scar on my left chin, which keeps on reminding me of the dreadful night even today. Cattle owners had then told me that they regularly pay “hafta” to Horticulture Department officials for their cattle to freely graze on the city grassland. Shame, that this illegality continues to exist even today with impunity!

Corruption root cause of all ills

Corruption in India is the root cause of all ills. Malignant growth of corruption has metastasised into all aspects of political, administrative and social set-ups. Numerous political individuals, bureaucrats, industrialists and private service providers have been accused of indulging in corruption. Even judiciary and media could not remain insulated against it. India figures among most corrupt countries of the world. Corruption breeds crime, retards economic growth, development, progress and ruins the life of a common man. In order to eradicate corruption, Centre and state governments must bring transparency in their functioning, fix accountability, create time-bound service delivery mechanisms, promote e-governance & e-transactions and strengthen legal and administrative framework.
