One booked for rape

Chandigarh: A resident of Chandigarh alleged that Gursimran Singh, a Patiala resident, raped her on the pretext of marriage. A case has been registered at the Sector 36 police station. According to the police, they sought legal opinion before registering an FIR. The accused is yet to be arrested. TNS

Man gets jail for robbery

Chandigarh:  A local court has awarded three-year jail to a resident of Sector 25 for robbery and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on him. On September 11, 2014, a case was registered against Krishan Kumar and two other juveniles. A complaint was registered by an army man, Surjeet Singh, who was on his way from the Sector 17 bus stand to Sector 8. When he reached the Sector 8 gurdwara at 5:15 am, some unknown persons standing near an auto approached him and attacked him with sticks. They snatched his carry bag, which had his uniform, a mobile phone, some money and his ID card besides some documents. After this, they escaped in the same auto. Eventually, the police managed to nab them from Sector 11 on the same day. The trial of the minors is on in the juvenile court. TNS

Three arrested with drugs

Chandigarh: The police arrested a Panchkula resident, Rahul, from near Prachin Shiv Mandir, Mauli Jagran, and recovered 250 gm of ganja from him. A case under Section 20 of the NDPS Act has been registered. A Ram Darbar resident, Dharminder, was also arrested with 24 injections of Buprenorphine and Pheniramine Maleate from Sector 38 (West). He was booked under Section 22 of the NDPS Act. The crime branch of the city police also arrested Karamdeep Singh, a Mohali resident, near Hallo Majra and recovered 5.5 gm of heroin. He was booked under Section 21 of the NDPS Act. TNS  

Chess meet from today

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Chess Parents Association will organise the 9th Open Chess Tournament at the Chandigarh Club, Sector 1, from Sunday. The championship will be held in the open, U-16, U-12 and veteran (60+ years) categories, the organisers said here on Saturday. The winners in all the categories will be given cash awards. A total of six rounds will be played and the tournament will start at 10 am, they added. The interested players can register for the event at the tournament venue.

Manish clinches bronze

Panchkula: Manish Kumar, a student of Government College, Sector 1, has won a bronze medal in the National Swimming Championship held in Pune. Manish had earlier represented India in the Asian meet and also participated in the All-India Inter-University Swimming Championship.

Warriors log 10-wkt win

Chandigarh: Warriors defeated Dominators XI by 10 wickets in the Arising Champion League held here on Saturday. Batting first, Dominators were bowled out for 83 runs in 17.5 overs. Subhash claimed 2/13 for Warriors, while Sandeep (23) and Hari (15) were the main contributors for Dominators. In reply, Warriors scampered home in 9.1overs with all the 10 wickets to spare. Lokesh hit a 50, while Dipanshu remained unbeaten on 23. 

Yadavindra boys win

Chandigarh: Yadvindra Pubic School, Mohali, defeated St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, by five wickets in the ongoing U-13 St Kabir T-20 Cricket Championship. Batting first, St Stephen’s boys scored 139/4 in 20 overs. Saiyam Singla (39), Samarveer (26) and Aryan Chug (22) contributed major share. Pratham took claimed two wickets and Sidharth claimed one for the bowling side. In reply, Yadvindra boys scored 140/5 in 19.2 overs.— TNS
