Mohali: Over 150 participants from several states across the country attended a two-day workshop on 'Futuristic Trends of Nano-Electronics, MEMS and NEMS', started at C-DAC, Mohali, here. On the first day of the event, DK Jain, director of C-DAC, talked about the rich history of the institution, proving its acumen to be a cohort in innovation of technology in the city. Prof Ashok K Ganguli, director, INST Mohali, emphasised the need for nanotechnology in fields of energy, environment, health and agriculture. TNS

Lecture on fire safety held 

Panjab University organised a lecture-cum-demonstration drill on fire safety for security personnel, security officers and staff on Thursday. A lecture on fire safety and demonstration drill was given by a crew from the Fire and Emergency Services of the MC, Chandigarh. It was followed by an interactive session in which lot of queries were addressed. The PU will organise similar activities for other staff of the university also. TNS

Rs 70,000, jewellery stolen

Chandigarh: Thieves decamped with gold and silver jewellery and Rs 70,000 from a house in Sector 11. The theft took place between June 7 and June 21. According to the police, the complainant, Manoj Kumar Puri, alleged that the theft took place in his house while he was away. He said the thieves took away a diamond ring, two gold chains, a mangal sutra, four sets of gold earrings, 10 silver coins, Rs 70,000 and a Nikon camera from the house. The police said the complainant had gone out of station with his family when the theft took place. The locks of the house were found broken by the servant, who informed the owners. A case has been registered at the Sector 11 police station. TNS

Woman dies as car overturns

Kharar: Shashi Malhotra (50) was killed while her husband Ravi Malhotra was injured when the car in which they were coming from Ludhiana overturned near Mamupur village on the Kharar-Morinda road on Thursday. Gharuan SHO Manphool Singh said the couple was coming in a Swift (PB10 EV 0677) when an animal suddenly came in front of the car, resulting in the mishap. They were taken to the Civil Hospital in Kharar where Shashi was declared dead. OC

Couple booked for fraud

Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Police have registered a case against a couple for duping a city resident of Rs 1.75 crore. Complainant Baljinder Singh said he had signed an agreement with accused Ranjit Singh Bath and Sukhmanpreet Bath regarding a house in Sector 44. He said he was promised 50 per cent share in the house following which he paid Rs 1.75 crore on various occasions to the accused. Singh alleged that the couple took a loan against the house and failed to repay the amount. The bank then auctioned the property. A case of cheating has been registered. TNS

Cop transferred

Chandigarh: A day after the Sector 17 SHO, inspector Ranjit Singh, was transferred to the IRB, in charge of the Sector 22 police post, was transferred to the Police Lines, Sector 26, on Thursday. Sub-inspector Joginder Singh, who was the in charge of the police post, has been transferred to the Police Lines. Chandigarh: The police arrested 30 persons for consuming liquor at public places on Thursday. They were later released on bail. Cases under the excise Act have been registered. TNS

1 held with 500 gm of gold

Chamkaur Sahib: Solving a theft case within 24 hours, the local police have claimed to recover more than 527 gm of gold, worth Rs 14 lakh, here on Thursday. The accused has been identified as Gagandeep Kumar, a neighbour of the complainant. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Navreet Singh Virk said Joginder Pal of Bela village had lodged a complaint on Wednesday that more than half-a-kg gold was missing from his home. He said he had noticed Gagandeep leaving his house. Later, the police nabbed Gagandeep from a naka and recovered the gold. TNS

Facelift for historical places

Fatehgarh Sahib: Fatehgarh Sahib will be made a well-developed tourist circuit. This was stated by Navjot Singh Sidhu, Minister for Tourism and Local Bodies, Punjab, while replying to a question raised by Kuljit Singh Nagra, MLA, Fatehgarh Sahib, during the Assembly session. Sidhu said the state government had already taken up the conservation work of tombs of Raffudin, Alfsani Bibi Taj and the Rauza Sharif mosque. He said the Aam Khas Bagh, Naughara, Sheesh Mahal and Mehtabi Bagh would also be restored to glory. Sidhu said the Aam Khas Bagh would also be given a facelift under the Mughal circuit as per the Swadesh Darshan Scheme of the Union Tourism Ministry. Gurdwara Fatehgarh Sahib, Rauza Sharif and Mata Jageshwari Temple will also developed as per the Spiritual Circuit Scheme of the Union Tourism Ministry. OC

Making youth self-reliant

Fatehgarh Sahib: The Rural Self-Employment Training Institute of the State Bank of India is providing professional training to unemployed youth so that they may start their own ventures. More than 2,750 unemployed youths have been imparted training and of these 525 youth have started their own business. The bank has arranged Rs 9.7 crore for these youth. This was stated by Kanwal Preet Brar, Deputy Commissioner. Hardial Singh Chatha, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development), said the youth are coming in large numbers to get training in various courses and a batch of youths was handed over certificates, who got training in computer accountancy. He said 74 youths, who got training in different streams from the centre got employment at different government departments. OC 

Ishan helps St. Joseph’s win

Skipper Ishan Gabba smashed an unbeaten 67 off 49 balls to enable St. Joseph’s School beat Lakshay XI Pinjore by 54 runs in the Sub-junior Challenger Cup cricket league on Thursday. Gabba propelled his team to a challenging 158/5 in 25 overs after the side lost three wickets for just 23 runs in 6 overs. Ansh Khurana contributed 22 runs to the total. In reply lakshay xi were bundled out on 104 runs in 24th overs. In reply, Lakshay XI were all out for just 104 runs. Jasjot (3/17) and Shrikanth Angris (3/22) claimed three wickets each for St. Joseph’s. In the second match of the day, Warriors Chandigarh beat Sunrise XI Zirakpur by 16 runs.

City cricketers to be felicitated 

The Chandigarh Cricket Association (affiliated to Punjab) will felicitate its boys’ U-19, boys’ U-16 and girls’ U-19 team for their performance in various inter-district tournaments, on Sunday. While the boys’ U-19 team emerged joint winners in the inter-district championship, U-16 boys finished at the top. Girls’ U-19 had also shared the inter-district trophy, the cricket body said on Thursday. The coaches of respective teams will also be felicitated during the function at Guru Nanak Public School.

Prison escape: One brought on production warrant

Panchkula: In the prisoner escape case, the Panchkula police on Thursday brought Satbir on production warrant from the Ambala jail. Satbir was lodged in the same barrack with gangster Deepak Kumar, who escaped from police custody on June 17. Satbir has been brought on six-days police remand. TNS

Trees replanted 

Chandigarh: The horticulture division of the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, replanted two trees at the rear of an SCO in Sector 21C and on the waterworks premises in Sector 39. The Municipal Commissioner directed  horticulture engineers to look after trees attacked by termite. — TNS
