Punjabi University, Patiala, is one of the best universities in Punjab and it has given wings to several students. Now this institution is in financial crisis. The institution that has been serving the people for the past several years is now facing severe issues that have corroded its image in India and abroad. Protests on the campus by university officials show that if Grade B and C staff are not being paid salary, what to think of grievances of students. There are several students, whom I know, who face issues ranging from multiple errors in DMCs, late results, fee-related issues despite payment made on time. Other issues include errors in names, wrong merit lists, etc. This is depressing for students. It takes a toll on their studies because they have to spare time to get these errors corrected. These mistakes should be corrected on a priority. What to expect of teachers if they are not given pay on time. There is a need to keep a check on the finances. Kindly make the revenue and expenditure list online to keep up the transparency. The Vice Chancellor should regularly visit administrative departments to see the reality. Teachers should not be transferred frequently. The government must do something now to steer the university from financial mess.

Hire consultants for periodical checks

The collapse of under-construction four-storeyed building at Peer Muchalla in Zirakpur has been most unfortunate. It speaks volumes of callousness in executing such major construction projects resulting into loss of life and property. Apparently it looks that the structure collapsed either due to faulty design, inadequacy of the soil to bear the load and the most vital use of substandard material by the builder to economise the cost. The incidence calls for the investigation by a high-tech committee to ascertain the reason behind the collapse. To avoid such recurrences, consultants/independent technical agencies must be hired by the builder for periodical checks at various stages of construction and the test results properly documented.
