The sterilisation of stray dogs has been on hold for the past one month due to the renovation of the sterilisation centre of the city Municipal Corporation (MC). Sources said it would take another two to three weeks to complete the renovation and till then the sterilisation work could not be carried out.

Besides, the firm roped in for it, has also refused to continue the work after July. The MC has floated a tender for engaging a new agency.

Meanwhile, though the city has been grappling with the stray dog menace, the joint action plan of tricity mayors in this regard is still on paper for over a year. Notably, mayors of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali, along with sarpanches of the villages falling under Chandigarh, had decided to form a coordination committee to hold monthly meetings regarding the stray dog management and rabies control. However, nothing has been done in this regard. It was also decided that the data regarding the number of stray dogs, their sterilisation and vaccination would be shared so that their exact number could be found. Around 500 to 600 dog-bite cases are being reported every month in the city.
