The road from Matka Chowk to the Sector 16/17 light point to will be closed for three months due to the construction of the second phase of a pedestrian underpass connecting Sector 17 with the Rose Garden. Sources in the Engineering Department said the construction work would start after the Rose Festival.
The Rose Festival will be held from February 23 to 25. The construction of the underpass is being undertaken in two phases. While the foundation for the underpass is being laid on both sides of the road, the work on the main carriageway will start after the Rose Festival.
The underpass is being constructed under the Smart City Project at Rs 8 crore. It is being constructed as part of the rejuvenation plan of Sector 17, prepared by a consultant. VP Singh Badnore, Governor of Punjab and UT Administrator, had laid the foundation of the underpass in June last year but the work was started in the first week of the December.
it is likely to be completed by September 2018. Sources said Mukesh Anand, Special Secretary, Engineering Department, had recently reviewed the progress. He directed officials to to adhere to the deadline for the completion of the project.
