Shaheed Udham Singh memorial at Rauza Sharif here, which was in a poor state, is being renovated and beautified at the cost of Rs 5 lakh and the renovation work will be completed by June 30, said Kanwal Preet Brar, Deputy Commissioner, while talking to mediapersons after inspecting the ongoing work.

She said Forest Minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot has sanctioned Rs 5 lakh for the renovation work.

The DC said an attractive gate and a flex board depicting the life of Shaheed Udham Singh would be installed. Other beautification works were also being done to attract tourists.

The DC said: “It was our moral responsibility to remember martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation so that they become a source of inspiration for the coming generations.

She said Shaheed Udham Singh’s sacrifice was not for any religion or caste, but to revenge the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, which made every Indian proud of his act.

In July 1974, the then Punjab Chief Minister Giani Zail Singh had brought the ashes of Shaheed Udham Singh to Punjab and as per his wishes, these ashes were buried at Roza Sharif Fatehgarh Sahib as Shaheed Udham Singh named himself as Ram Mohammad Singh Azad and desired that his last rites be done as per all religions. Since then, a memorial was constructed by the administration and the land was given by the Roza Sharif management which was lying in a dilapidated condition.
