Speaker recalls freedom fighters’ sacrifice

PATIALA: Recalling the sacrifices made by freedom fighters such as Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Kartar Singh Sarabha, Lala Lajpat Rai and Udham Singh, Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Rana KP Singh said Punjabis have always led from the front when it comes to making sacrifices for the nation.

Recalling the sacrifices made by freedom fighters such as Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Kartar Singh Sarabha, Lala Lajpat Rai and Udham Singh, Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Rana KP Singh said Punjabis have always led from the front when it comes to making sacrifices for the nation.

He stated this during the flag-hoisting ceremony on the Independence Day at the YPS Stadium here yesterday.

Highlighting the plight of farmers, Rana KP Singh said farmers in the state were suffering for the past some years and had chosen to commit suicide.

“Youth have been in the grip of drugs, following which law and order situation in the state has also taken a hit. This is an alarming situation for the state,” he said.

Appreciating the efforts of the Congress government in the state, the Speaker said it was making efforts to bail out farmers and was taking steps to ensure that farming is brought back on track.

“The government has taken some initiatives and concrete steps would be taken soon to bail out the state farmers,” he said.

Speaking about development plans for Patiala, the Speaker said: “Development of Patiala is also a priority for which canal-based drinking water, LED streetlights, better health, education and road infrastructure will soon be completed in the city”. He said farmers and city residents, who have been facing fury of wild animals, would get respite as wiring around the forest land is already on and would be completed soon.

After inspecting the parade, he took the salute of the march past led by the Commander, DSP, Sukhamrit Singh Randhawa. 

MP Dharamvira Gandhi, MLA Samana Rajinder Singh, former Patiala MLA Preneet Kaur, District and Sessions Judge Sanjiv Beri among others were present.

National Flag unfurled

Patiala: A Venu Prasad, Principal Secretary (Power), Punjab, and CMD, PSPCL and PSTCL, unfurled the National Flag on Independence Day at the PSPCL Headquarters. On the occasion, RP Pandove, Director Administration, SC Arora, Director Finance, MR Parhar, Director Generation, OP Garg, Director Commercial, NK Sharma, Director Distribution, and other officers and employees participated in the event.  — TNS

Fervour marks I-Day celebrations at schools

Patiala: Independence Day was celebrated at SS Kaura Model High School, Bhadson. The school was adorned with tricolour balloons and flags. The special assembly of students created an ambiance of patriotism. Students performed cultural activities, sung patriotic songs, presented a play depicting the efforts of freedom fighter and an act on social issues. The school echoed with slogans of “Jai Hind”. The programme concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.

Blossoms Sr Sec School

The Independence Day celebrations at Blossoms Senior Secondary School, Patiala, began with the unfurling of the National Flag by principal Bindu Vaid. She also paid tributes to freedom fighters and also spoke about the 75th anniversary of the ‘Quit India Movement’.

Akal Academy, Reeth Kheri

Independence Day was celebrated at Akal Academy, Reeth Kheri. The programme commenced with the flag hoisting by Principal Shaminderpal Kaur. It was followed with National Anthem. The event was a collaboration of various cultural activities. Ashwinder Kaur and her companions sung patriotic song.

Ryan International School

Ryan International School, Patiala, celebrated Independence Day with gaiety. Children of the Montessori Wing celebrated the day by putting up a brief cultural show comprising patriotic speech, poem recitation and two choreographed patriotic dances in a special ceremony. The school choir sang melodious prayer and patriotic songs. Students paid homage to freedom fighters by singing patriotic poems. A skit was also presented by students on anti-begging where they urged the students to join hands to stop begging and make India begging-free. Principal Pooja Sharma addressed the students.

DAV, Patiala

Patriotism verve, enthusiasm and ebullience were witnessed at DAV Patiala during the Independence Day celebrations. Chief guest principal SR Prabhakar, along with guest of honour Saroj Prabhakar, unfurled the National Flag. Choreography based on PT, gymnastics and yoga aptly gave the message of healthy body and mind. During the function, 17 students who performed exceedingly well in Olympiads were also honoured. In addition, 18 teachers who acted as master trainers during various workshops organised by DAV Centre for Academic Excellence, New Delhi, were also honoured.

St Peter’s Academy

St Peter’s Academy saluted the nation and its freedom fighters on Independence Day. Manager Rev Fr. Kjus and principal Rev Fr John Bosco hoisted the flag. Management, staff and students marked the occasion by holding a unique march past. Inter-house competitions were conducted to make this day more special.  — OC
