Chandigarh, June 20
After almost nine years, the Administration has revived the Transport Nagar project.
The plan is to shift the existing transport area from Sector 26
to Daria village, where the Administration has already earmarked 65 acres.
Sources said a meeting of senior officers was held today in which the project was discussed. It was decided that the Land Acquisition Officer would be asked to start the process for acquiring land earmarked for the project. Transporters of the city have been raising the demand for a new transport area for long.
A senior official of the Administration said apart from Daria, another Transport Nagar was also under consideration at Sector 56 so that heavy vehicles coming from Mohali could be provided space there. He said the new transport areas would ease congestion, particularly on roads connecting Sector 26 and the Chandigarh Railway Station.? The plan to create the new transport area was first mooted in 2009, but it did not materialise.
Every day, there is a movement of at least 400 trucks in the city and many use the parking space for the loading and unloading of goods. When the transport area was developed, it was in the corner of the city, but now with the development of Panchkula, the area no longer lies on the fringe. An official said the proposed Transport Nagar would provide direct connectivity to the Chandigarh-Ambala road.
