Chandigarh: City MP Kirron Kher laid the foundation stone of a railway underbridge at Mani Majra Railway Crossing No. 126. The construction of the underbridge will be started immediately as the tender for it has already been allotted. The underbridge was a long-pending demand of the area residents due to frequent traffic jams. The height of underbridge will be 10 feet and width 36 feet. There will be a water drainage system to avoid waterlogging during the rainy season. TNS

Four held for robbery 

Chandigarh: The crime branch of the UT police arrested four person for robbing two waiters near the Sector 32/33 chowk. Basant Thapa, a resident of Burail village, had complained that he was returning home with his friend Ramesh from Sector 26 on August 10 when the four youths, riding a Toyota Etios, stopped them and robbed them at knifepoint. The victims were robbed of cash and mobile phones. Police said two of the accused, identified as Ranjit, alias Jeet, and Mukesh, both residents of the EWS colony, Dhanas, were arrested from near the dumping ground, Dadu Majra. the other two accused, identified as Suraj, a resident of the EWS colony, Dhanas, and Sudhir Singh of Ludhiana were arrested from the Shastri market, Sector 22. A mobile phone robbed from the victims have been recovered and the car used in the crime has also been impounded. TNS

2 nabbed for stabbing youth 

Chandigarh: Seven days after 25-year-old youth was stabbed and robbed of cash and a mobile phone near the ISBT, Sector 17, the crime branch of the UT police managed to arrest two persons. Sunil Kumar, a resident of Khuda Lahora, was waiting for an auto-rickshaw near the bus stand on August 7 when the accused, riding a motorcycle, arrived and stabbed in the chest. They robbed him of Rs 2,000 in cash, a mobile phone and a bag containing clothes. The victim was admitted at the PGI. The accused have been identified as Kirti and Gaurav, both residents of Nayagaon, Mohali. The victim’s mobile phone and the motorcycle used in the crime has been recovered. The police said another stolen motorcycle has also been recovered from Gaurav.  TNS

2 more  swine  flu cases in city   

Chandigarh:   Two cases of swine flu were reported from the city on Monday.  A 45-year-old  woman from Ram Darbar and a 19-year-old woman from Dhanas  were  tested  positive  for  swine  flue. Dr Gaurav Aggarwal, nodal officer of the UT Health Department, informed that both patients  were  admitted  to  the GMCH, Sector 32, on monday.  According to Dr Aggarwal, with the two  more cases, the number of swine flu patients had gone up to  36.  Five cases of the  swine  flu were confirmed on Sunday. Youth commits suicide 

Dera Bassi: A 21-year-old youth committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at Haripur Hindaun village here on Sunday evening. The deceased has been identified as Mohit Kumar, a resident of the same village. Investigation officer Gulshan Kumar said the incident took place at 7 pm on Sunday when the victim allegedly consumed some poisonous substance at his shop. He was rushed to the GMCH, Sector 32,Chandigarh, sources added. OC

Woman ends her life 

Kalka: A 19-year married women committed suicide in Surajpur here on Monday. According to police sources, Gainda Kumari, wife of Ravi Kumar, a resident of Rampur Seuri village near Surajpur, ended her life by hanging herself. She took the extreem step when she was alone at home. The police have started the investigation. OC

Notorious criminal arrested 

Chandigarh: A notorious criminal, involved in several cases of vehicle theft and burglary, has been arrested by the police. A toy pistol and 12 mobile phones have been recovered from hm. DSP (Central) Ram Gopal said the accused, identified as Ajay Kumar, alias Mody, a resident of Dhanas village, was apprehended from near the Dhanas village. He worked as a driver. The police said the accused had admitted that on July 31 and August 6, he robbed two persons of Rs 4,500 and 7,500 near Dhanas. The accused also confessed of snatching a purse, containing a mobile phone, from a woman in Sector 15 on January 1. The DSP said he had also admitted of snatching mobile phones from various people across the city. TNS
