Patiala, April 18

Miffed at the non-acceptance of their demands, a number of students, including research scholars, held a protest at Punjabi University, Patiala. The leader of the Punjab Students’ Union, Gursewak Singh, said they had given a letter to Vice-Chancellor (VC) BS Ghuman regarding their demands but the authorities failed to address their grievances.

The students said the government should release funds for the university and provide a special grant of Rs 500 crore.  Gursewak Singh said, “Vacant seats of teachers should be filled as soon as possible. The rules related to annual exams and the time span for research work for doctorate students should be fixed as per guidelines of the University Grants Commission.” The students said the hike in fee for document verification and other works should be rolled back at the earliest.  They said the RO system in hostels and WiFi facility in the university should be upgraded.
