Patiala, May 21

Members of the 5178 Master Cadre Union held a state-level convention here in the city. The teachers were demanding regularisation of their jobs as at present they are working on a contractual basis in the Education Department.

Inderjit Singh, state president of the union, said they were being paid less for the past two-and-a-half year as they were getting only Rs 6,000 per month.

He said they were TET qualified teachers but still the government failed to provide them salaries as per the fixed scale.

The members of the union urged the government to issue the notification salary as per the fixed scale to the highly qualified teachers.

They said due to the nominal salaries they were being harassed at the hands of the administration and to provide quality education to students, the government should pay them good salaries.

The members said if the government failed to address their demands, they would intensify their stir.

Other unions, including the Democratic Teachers Front and the Students for Society, extended their support to the protesting teachers.
