Mohali, June 18

As many as 70 protesting TET unemployed teachers were on Monday booked for attempt to suicide or for being involved in the act after four of them climbed atop a water tank in Sohana. While they were brought down by the police in less than six hours, the others were also booked as the police said they were inciting the ones on top to jump and commit suicide.

Around 3 am, the teachers reached Mohali and with the help of a ladder, two male and two female teachers climbed atop the tank. The others started a protest on the road demanding jobs as soon as possible. The protesters said they were promised jobs, but the promise had not been kept and they had come for a “do-or-die” fight. The four who climbed the water tank were Ravneet Kaur, Mandeep Kaur, Bageecha Singh and Amandeep Singh.

Police officials, including SHOs, started reaching the spot around 3.30 am. The police were prepared for any eventuality and a couple of safety nets were also in place in case someone attempted to jump off. Subdivisional Magistrate RP Singh also reached the spot and appealed the teachers to end their protest.

Later, a crane was brought by the police and the four teachers were brought down. An FIR was later registered at the Sohana police station against 70 protesters of whom 64 accused were named. They have been booked under Sections 309, 511, 188 and 283 of the IPC.
