Top seed Hardeep sails into second round

Top seed Hardeep Singh Sandhu defeated city’s Digvijay Singh Mehta 6-4 6-3 to move into the men’s second round in the ongoing CLTA-AITA National Ranking Tennis Championship at the CLTA Complex, Sector 10, here today.  

Young Sultan Singh Atwal upset sixth seed Sunil Malik in a marathon three setter. Atwal won the first set 6-2 but Malik came back strongly in the second set (7-5) to draw parity. 

In the final set, Atwal used all the variations up his sleeves to dominate his opponent. Atwal served big and landed his forehands to perfection to beat Malik 6-1.

Udayan Bhakar, meanwhile, moved ahead without much trouble, beating Himanshu Mor 6-1 6-0. 

Amit Beniwal got the better of Koonwar Gupta, while Yuvraj Singh rallied from a set down to edge out Himanshu Sagar. 

Beniwal won the first set in a tie breaker 7-6(5) and dominated Gupta in the second set (6-2) to march ahead. 

Yuvraj, on the other hand, lost the first set 6-7(5). He, however, won the next sets 7-6 6-3 to fetch a place in the second round.

Ashpreet, Prinkle advance

In the women’s singles event, Ashpreet Kaur Bajwa stunned seventh seed Adrija Biswas to proceed further. 

Ashpreet won the first set 6-3, but Adrija levelled the scores with a 6-3 win in the second set. Ashpreet, though, regained her composure to clinch the final set 6-1. 

Prinkle Singh sailed into the second set without any hassles even as she was forced into committing errors by Nikita Bishnoi in the opening set. 

Prinkle won the first set 6-4 and settled down well to pocket the second set 6-1. 

Shilpi Swaropadas was made to sweat by a resilient Vibhashree Gowda before she advanced to the second round with a sea-saw win.

Shilpi dominated her opponent in the opening set, but failed to carry on the momentum as Vibhashree came back to level the scores in the second set. 

Shilpi, however, dominated the court in the final set to close the match 6-1 1-6 6-1.  

Dedeepya Sai overcame Yubrani Banerjee in another three setter. After winning the first set 

6-2, Dedeepya lost the second set 3-6. But in the final set, she regained her form to win the match with a 7-6(5) win. 

The singles second round and doubles pre-quarterfinal matches in both men and women categories will be played tomorrow, said the organisers.
