Kalka: A youth took away a gold kara of a shopkeeper by befooling him. Kehar Singh (70), who runs Punjab Dairy on the Kasauli road in Kalka, said a youth came to his shop at 8.30 am on Sunday and asked him for some dairy products.

He also pretended to be a friend of his son and even talked to his son on the mobile phone. The miscreant asked Kehar Singh to give his gold kara, which he was wearing, as he wanted to show its design to his mother sitting in the car parked nearby. He took the kara and fled. The kara was worth Rs 50,000. OC

Cong hails govt decision

Fatehgarh Sahib: Hundreds of Congress workers and leaders, led by Kuljit Singh Nagra, MLA, organised a function to celebrate the decision of the state government to develop Fatehgarh Sahib as a tourist hub. Addressing the gathering, Nagra said Fatehgarh Sahib, where two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh were bricked alive, has witnessed development only during the Congress regime. He said Fatehgarh Sahib was given the status of a district by the government led by the late Beant Singh. “Now, the Congress government has decided to make it a major tourist destination. With this, the development and business activities will get a boost,” said Nagra. He said the state government has already undertaken the conservation work of the Rauza Sharif mosque, Aam Khas Bagh, Sheesh Mahal and Mehtabi Bagh. OC

Relief for college engineer likely

Fatehgarh Sahib: The suspended executive engineer (XEN) of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College may be reinstated till the outcome of the inquiry report against him. One of the inquiry panel members has urged the SGPC president to reinstate him on medical grounds. Notably, he was accused of withdrawing salary from various institutions.  SGPC chief Kripal Singh Badungar said Manpreet Singh was suspended on May 23 and one of the panel members had urged him to give relief to him as he was suffering from some serious disease. Badungar said a decision would be taken after the return of the secretary of the college trust, Paramjit Singh Saroa, who had gone abroad to attend the International Punjabi Conference. Manpreet Singh said he had been targeted due to rivalry among employees. Meanwhile, a senior member of the SGPC, said he could not be suspended as he was drawing allowances from other institutions for the services rendered by him on the advice of former SGPC presidents.  TNS  

2 thefts reported from city

Chandigarh:  Two theft cases have been reported from Chandigarh. Anmol Thakur, a resident of Sector 22, alleged that someone stole three mobile phones and a purse containing documents from his residence between June 23 and June 25 when the family was not at home. A case under Section 380 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 17 police station. Ranjit Sood, a resident of Sector 37, reported that someone stolen two tyres and the music system of his vehicle parked near his house. A case under Section 379 of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at the Sector 39 police station. TNS
