UT submits management plan of Capitol Complex to UNESCO

Activities around the Capitol Complex will be restricted with the creation of a buffer zone around the world heritage site. This is one of the several recommendations made in the management plan of the Capitol Complex submitted to UNESCO by the UT Administration.

Sources said the plan prepared by the UT’s Heritage Consultant had been submitted by the Ministry of Tourism on behalf of the UT Administration to UNESCO.

UNESCO had fixed the deadline of December 1, 2017, for the submission of the plan.

The Administration has selected Mumbai-based heritage architect Abha Narian Lambah to prepare the conservation and management plan for the Capitol Complex, declared as the world heritage site by UNESCO.

Under the plan, all buildings of the Capitol Complex will be given original look as designed by world famous architect Le Corbusier. Besides, creation of a terraced garden on the rooftop of the secretariat buildings had also been proposed, which was in the original plan.

Various agencies of the Administration and the Municipal Corporation will be assigned the task to maintain the Capitol Complex. The buffer zone will protect the complex from any possible harmful activities. The comprehensive plans for the better management envisage maintenance of the original character of the complex buildings and fulfilling the incomplete buildings.

Mukesh Anand, Special Secretary of the Engineering Department, said the department had already started restoration work at the secretariat buildings of the Capitol Complex. Loose wires, AC ducts, temporary structures, porch and large scale violations in the secretariat buildings were being removed.
