The Municipal Corporation will soon set up a waste-to-energy plant in Dadu Majra and a compost plant in Maloya.

The civic body is hopeful of getting the possession of 10 acres in Dadu Majra, where the waste-to-refuse-derived fuel (RDF) plant is being run since 2008 by the Jaypee Group. The MC terminated its contract with the firm in the last House meeting. The plant management had last year told the MC that it was suffering a loss of Rs 50 lakh every month.

Thus, once the Jaypee takes away its machines from the land, the civic body wants to have a company which produces energy from waste.  The energy will be sold to power companies and industries. The byproduct of the combustion process will be non-hazardous ash residue, which will be about 10 per cent of the original volume of the trash and can also be used for road construction and at brick kilns.

Mayor Asha Kumari Jaswal said the issue would be taken up in the coming House meeting and tenders would be floated to finalise the company. The compost plant in Maloya will have a capacity of 250-300 tonnes per day.  It will also help in wet and dry waste segregation plan.Following the Jaypee Group’s offer, the civic body is going to give 30 days’ time to the firm to take away its machines from the garbage processing plant.
