Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal today participated in a protest march taken out by students on the North Campus of Delhi University to express solidarity with the DCW’s “satyagraha” against increasing cases of sexual violence against girls and women.

To put pressure on the Centre, the DCW chairperson has launched a people’s movement “RapeRoko” as a part of her satyagraha to urge the government to set up a mechanism to ensure that rapists of children are given death penalty within six months.

Referring to the recent rape of an infant by her cousin in the national Capital, the DCW chief said, “It is not the rape of an innocent child, but the rape of our entire nation. The ‘RapeRoko’ movement will mobilise people of the country to raise their voice against sexual crimes. Now the DCW will work as a people’s movement. When thousands of people throng the streets, government will be forced to listen.”

The march was carried out by the students from the Delhi University Metro Station to Arts Faculty which was joined by the DCW chief. It came a day after sexual harassment of a DU student in a public bus.
