To check the over-speeding vehicles on the city roads the Delhi Traffic Police launched 11 hi-tech interceptor mobile vans which can track speeding vehicles through laser-based cameras not just during the day but in the night also.

According to the Commissioner of Police, Amulya Patnaik, while flagging off the interceptor told his officers that the focus of the interceptor should also be on residential colonies, reminding the recent accidents in which a senior IAS officer’s mother and a senior journalist were killed by a speeding vehicle.

The Commissioner of Police said, “The amount of rash driving in residential colonies is more therefore, deploying these interceptors in such areas will act as a deterrent.”

With these interceptors which can also operate in the night unlike its predecessors, the police hope to double the number of challans and also bring down road fatalities. The laser-based cameras fitted in these vehicles can generate a challan in seconds and identify a speeding vehicle in a lane full of vehicles.

These can work in all light conditions and produce a photograph of the registration number plate of the speeding vehicle with its Global Positioning System (GPS).

Special Commissioner of Police of the Delhi Police (Traffic) Ajay Kashyap said, “A number of people indulge in over speeding and rash driving, especially during nights when the routes are deserted. Till now, we had 11 interceptors which work only during the day but now we have 11 more which will keep watch on over speeding vehicles in evening and night also.”

He said, "The laser-based system which can work day and night will instantly identify the speeding vehicle even among other vehicles.
