New Delhi, June 24

In yet another case of negligent driving, two pavement dwellers were killed and two were injured when they were run over by a car at Kashmere Gate today. The victims are yet to be identified, said a police official.

The incident occurred in the noon when a person, identified as Harish, was driving an Etios car from Rajghat towards ISBT. The car ran over four persons who were sleeping on the pavement at Kashmiri Gate. Two persons died on the spot while the two others received injuries and are admitted to a nearby hospital. The police have arrested the driver.

The accused said he was trying to save a beggar who was crossing the road and swerved to the left. He ended up taking the car over the pavement, said the official.

The official said his claims were being verified.

An eyewitness, Manoj Saxena said in the noon I was going towards a temple on my cycle when I saw a white car in a high speed climbed over the pavement and ran over people sleeping there. It seemed the driver was drunk and had lost control over the vehicle.

The locals came to the rescue and called the police.

In April, two pavement dwellers were killed and as many injured after they were ran over by a car allegedly driven by a Class XII student in Kashmere Gate.

According to a recent statistic, one serious road accident occurs in every minute in India and 16 people die in every hour in road accidents.
