100-yr-old sports festival begins
Jalandhar: An annual sports festival commenced at Droli Kalan village here on Sunday. In the first match of football, Jangliana Club defeated Sant Baba Bagh Singh University 2-0. Deputy Chief Engineer of the PSPCL YPS Bath was the chief guest. Chief engineer Harpreet Singh and engineer Pargat Singh were also present on the occasion. Harjinder Singh Minhas, general secretary, Sports Committee, said, "The festival is organised every year in memory of Shaheed Baba Mati by the village sports committee. It is being sponsored by NRIs of the village. This year, the 100-year-old tournament will end on August 16." In other matches, PIS Hoshiarpur and Jangiwal Club registered wins in their respective matches. Besides football, other games, including volleyball and kabaddi, are also part of the tournament. . TNS
11 booked for ransacking dhaba
Phagwara: The police have booked Varinder Singh of Bhabhiana village and 10 unidentified persons for ransacking a dhaba situated on the Phagwara-Hoshiarpur road. The complainant, Vijay Kumar, told the police that the accused assaulted him and ransacked his dhaba on Saturday night. He also told the police that the accused damaged his car parked outside the dhaba. A case under Sections 451, 160, 427, 506 and 148 of the IPC has been registered against the accused. An old rivalry was said to be the reason behind the attack, the police added. No arrest has been made so far. OC
ASI suspended
Phagwara: SP Parminder Singh Bhandal has suspended ASI Jagtar Singh posted at the Sadar police station in Phagwara. Jagtar was caught red-handed by the Vigilance Bureau, headed by DSP Manjit Singh, on Saturday while taking a bribe of Rs 3,000 from Gagan Kumar for changing a few sections in a criminal case. The accused was arrested under the Prevention of Corruption Act. OC
