40 breeds take part in dog show at Science City

Pushpa Gujral Science City (PGSC) today organised a dog show on the premises of Science City to provide information to the general masses about this important gene pool. With over 100 entries, 150 dogs of 40 breeds, participated in the dog show from Punjab and its neighbouring states.

Dr Rajesh Grover, Director, PGSC said domesticated animals and plants played a crucial role in human civilization and culture. This important gene pool has been promoted, conserved and used by man for its economic, ecological and cultural value, he added.

Dr Grover said dogs constitute an important part of the domesticated faunal gene pool as several breeds are used for working, sport, herding, hunting and as toys. The World Canine Organisation is the largest registry of dog breeds in the world. It recognises 339 breeds of dogs, divided into10 groups.

Several breeds like the Caravan Hound, Rajapalyam Hound, Rampur Hound, Venjari Hound, Santal Hound, Indian Mastiff, Indian Pariah Dog, Himalayan Sheep Dog and Bully Kutta are among the indigenous breeds.

The Science City Director said over the years, the role of the dog has changed and it has had a significant impact on the lives of humans. It is time to create awareness among the people about domesticated bio-diversity with a focus on salient features of various breeds of dogs. It is with this objective that the PGSC has made an effort to organise the second all breed open dog show.

Brigadier NR Babu of the 38 Infantry Brigade was the chief guest on the occasion. In his address, he sought to dwell on the usefulness of dogs in the Army and police for war and peace. He lauded the initiatives of the PGSC while providing an opportunity to the spectators to have a day of enjoyment and fun with dogs at the show.

Results

Ring-2 First prize was won by Akita (Bhupinder Singh from Ludhiana), second prize by German Shepherd (Ajmar Singh from Ludhiana) and third prize by Boxer.

Ring-1 Doberman got the first prize (Rajive Kalia from Jalandhar), second and third prizes won by Akita and Boxer.
