It was just an intimacy of seven days that led to the killing and charring the body of 20-year-old Kavita, a resident of Deep Nagar. Police Commissioner Praveen Sinha said at a press conference that Kavita was married to a Garha resident and had a three-year-old daughter. However, she used to fight with her husband and had begun to stay with her parents in the Deep Nagar area. On November 27, Kavita had gone to attend a marriage at her maternal uncle’s place and met the accused Vishal Kumar, a resident of Phillaur.

Later, the friendship turned into an intimate affair and Vishal allegedly took Kavita and her daughter away for two days from her home. They returned, but Kavita again asked him to take her along.

This time, Vishal left her daughter home and only took her out for a few days. During interrogation, Vishal confessed that he was in relationship with another girl and wanted to get rid of Kavita. Since she refused to part with him, Vishal decided to kill her.

He made a plan and took Kavita to the surgical complex at around 7 pm. He strangulated her and went back to his uncle’s home in Shaheed Babu Labh Singh Nagar. Following this, his uncle Raman Kumar and his own brother Rajan Kumar went to a filling station nearby and bought petrol.

Later, all three of them went to the crime site and poured petrol on her body and set her ablaze. Sinha said the police had got substantial spot and forensic evidence to prove its claim. It had also recovered some forensic evidence from the unburnt body parts of the deceased woman. The police had also got a major clue from a nearby CCTV camera where both Vishal and Kavita were seen coming on a motorcycle and were also seen by nearby residents. While the police arrested Vishal Kumar and Raman Kumar, Vishal’s younger brother Rajan managed to escape from the police net during the raid.

The police have registered an FIR and begun to search for the third accused.
