The battle of garden supremacy is all set to be held on March 19 at Jawahar Park in the cantonment area.

Known for embracing the trends in organic and urban gardening, the annual flower show is all set to weave a magic of colour and beauty from the gardens in the area.

Jalandhar Cantonment Board CEO Meenakshi Lohia said preparations were under way to hold the much-awaited event for nature lovers.

“As always, we will be holding competitions in various individual and unit categories. Also, we are planning to introduce some more categories this year, but these will only be finalised during the general meeting to be held on Tuesday,” said Lohia.

She further said that the garden show would be divided into two groups. The first group will be open to all, whereas the second group will only be held for serving soldiers. Gardens from various educational institutions of Jalandhar, individual and public garden, terrace gardens and regimental gardens will also be part of the competition. Also, on-the-spot rangoli and painting competitions for the children will be organised.

Besides individual prizes, rolling trophies will be awarded for the best maintained institutional garden, best maintained roundabout, best-maintained private garden and best-maintained arboricultural project in the cantonment.

Besides, during the flower show, nature lovers will get a chance to stroll through the gorgeous flower-packed garden with artfully arranged plants, trees and numerous varieties of flowers in full bloom. The nature lovers will get a chance to design and watch the flower-making demonstrations by professionals. They will also get a chance to speak to various experts who will reply to queries posed by spectators.

Flower show history

Jalandhar Cantonment is one of the oldest cantonments in India, the construction of which was started in 1848 after the first Anglo-Sikh War, when the British settled in northern India. The original scope of this cantonment was limited to troops to quell disturbances in adjoining states for the maintenance of peace and order. The departure of the British from India and subsequent partition of the country changed the complexion of the cantonment. It has gained tremendous importance on account of its nearness to the border with Pakistan.

The annual flower show is held in this cantonment from the British period. It is organised by the Cantonment Board with the help of Jalandhar Garrison. It has inspired residents of the cantonment as well as Jalandhar City to take greater interest in flower and plants.
