Jalandhar, December 7

The newly-wed BJP candidate from ward number 56, Dhawanjot Kaur, today lodged a complaint against Congress candidate Palani Appan for misrepresentation of facts in his candidature. While submitting a written complaint to the returning officer, Kaur said that Appan claimed to be hailing from the Dhobi community (backward class) whereas his brother Bellu, working as a sanitation worker with the Municipal Corporation, has mentioned himself as a ‘Balmiki’, which is recognised as a schedule caste in Punjab.

“How come two real brothers have different castes,” she asked, demanding an investigation into the matter.

When contacted, Appan informed that his father got married to another woman and Bellu was his step brother. “I do not know as to why he has mentioned himself as a Balmiki in his application form. As far as I am concerned, I have mentioned facts in my form,” he said, adding that the Congress had raised this issue in the last election also and even took him to the court but he won the case.
