The BSP candidate from the Kartarpur constituency, Balwinder Kumar (38), is one of the most educated candidates from the region who will be contesting the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections.

A former journalist, he refused to join the APRO’s job to serve people through this party.

“I chose to work for the party to serve the people of the state. I have been working for people since I refused the job. As a journalist, I also worked on issues directly concerned to people, particularly the marginalised sections of society. The reason I didn’t join job was to serve people,” said Balwinder.

“Generally, what is happening is the best talent going to jobs and not to politics. Therefore the desired reforms have not been taking place. Intellectuals must join political or social work to make the difference. Directly or indirectly, they must work in social fields to sort the issues out,” believes Balwinder Kumar, adding that he has one life and he wanted to devote his life while serving people.

Speaking on the agendas he has been taking up in this election, he said the major issue was to empower to people. The desired growth has not been taking place. That is why the community is not growing.

“Improving the poor education and health sectors is the prime motive. I will be making efforts for raising the budget for these sectors. I believe in bringing the education institutions accessible to everyone. I want to work on community involvement like the NRI involvement to make the quality education and health system accessible to the general public. Local schools like NRI participation. Apart from this, I will make administration of the constituency accountable to the people so that they can be approached without any middleman,” said Balwinder as he believes that society has been paralysed with the system of middleman.

“Apart from me, my entire family, including my parents and wife, has been campaigning for me,” he added.

Before joining the BSP, Balwinder worked in prominent national vernacular and English newspapers weekly papers and online portals
