CID constable, teacher held on drug smuggling charge

JALANDHAR: Intensifying its move against drug trade after the new government came to power in the state, the Jalandhar Rural Police today claimed to have arrested a CID constable and a private school teacher, who is son of police personnel in the district, in connection with allegedly smuggling 2 kg opium and 20 gm heroin.

Intensifying its move against drug trade after the new government came to power in the state, the Jalandhar Rural Police today claimed to have arrested a CID constable and a private school teacher, who is son of police personnel in the district, in connection with allegedly smuggling 2 kg opium and 20 gm heroin.

The accused were identified as Pavitar Singh, CID constable (presently in PAP 7 Battalion), a resident of Mohadpur near Bhogpur, and Amapreet Singh, a private school teacher and resident of Kabir Avenue, Jalandhar.

SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said, “This is the fourth consignment of smuggling that they were supposed to sell. The accused have been smuggling for the past one year. They used to smuggle this stuff from Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh. Another person who indulged in smuggling from Nawanshahr will be arrested soon.”

He said by adopting a zero tolerance policy, the DGP Punjab police had already decided to dismiss the arrested police constable, who has completed 15 years of service.

“We got a tip-off about the alleged involvement of these people in drug smuggling. Based on the information, we checked a Swift car, bearing registration number PB 08 DF 7456. An FIR was registered against the accused under the NDPS Act. Further investigation is on in the case,” said the SSP.

SHO sent to Police Linesfor negligence

Phagwara: SHO, Satnampura, Sulkhan Singh, was sent to the Police Lines on the charge of showing negligence in duty, especially in the time-bound “Four-week drug eradication campaign”. A senior police official said here on Saturday that negligence in performing duty in the “drugs eradication campaign” could not be tolerated at any cost, adding that all cops would have to perform their duties efficiently. He said instructions were being issued to all cops to remain in uniform while on duty and this would be made compulsory.
