Following the instructions of the Health Department, a seminar on World Hypertension Day was held at the office of the Civil Surgeon here today.

At another district-level seminar held at Shaheed Baba Labh Singh Memorial Nursing School, Dr Harpreet Mann, a senior health official, was present. He was welcomed by principal Gurbaksh Kaur.

Dr Harpreet Mann said the theme of World Hypertension Day this year was “know your blood pressure”. He said the prime cause of blood pressure was bad lifestyle, improper food and stressful life. Mann said the increase in the blood pressure in the body was termed as hypertension.

Under normal circumstances, blood pressure is 80/120. The symptoms of high BP are pain, blurred vision, discomfort, weariness, difficulty in breathing and uneven heart-beat among others. It is said if a person controls one’s food habits and weight then he can be saved from BP-related complications.

Senior Medical Officer Dr Rajeev Sharma said blood pressure was a silent killer and one should get his blood pressure checked from time to time.

He said it was necessary to stay away from salt, ghee, fried foods, cigarette and alcohol and turn to exercise, meditation, simple food and simple living.

Principal Gurbaksh Kaur, deputy mass media officer Shashi Bala, nursing school staff and students were present on the occasion.

The theme for World Hypertension Day is Know Your Numbers with a goal of increasing high blood pressure awareness.
