The Municipal Corporation’s Health Department today imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on fish traders for causing pollution in the Bist Doab canal passing through the city.

Dr Sri Krishna, assistant health officer, said as these traders used to bring fish in water from faraway places, they used to throw it in the dry canal situated nearby.

“The polluted water was not only spreading foul smell in the area but was also causing contamination in the air. We have directed them to not throw water in the canal in future,” said Dr Sree.
