Kerala emerged victorious with a score of 2-0 over Gujarat in the first match of the 22nd Senior National Women’s Football Championship presently being held at DAV College. Jalandhar North MLA Bawa Henry was the chief guest for matches on Friday. Principal of DAV College SK Arora said the institute was proud to organise the championship. Head of the physical education department Dr Manu Sood thanked the Punjab State Football Association for giving the institute the chance to organise the championship and said he would not leave any stone unturned to make the event successful. DAV College, Jalandhar, will organise nine matches of the championship which will be held till May 24.

Hockey trials

Hockey Punjab will hold trails on May 22 at the PAP Astro Turf to select the senior state team that would represent Punjab in the senior state championships to be held on June 15 at Lucknow. Hockey Punjab secretary Pargat Singh said that a coaching camp would be organised after the selection trails are over.

Cricket tournament

The Bhargav Cricket Association, Punjab, on Friday held the U-19 State Cricket Tournament at Harbhajan Singh Institute of Cricket at FC Sondhi ground in the city. The tournament is held annually in the memory of late cricketer Karan Bhargav. In the first super six match, Phillaur team won over Jalandhar by 10 runs and batsman Ajay was declared man of the match. Punjab Cabinet Minister Rana Gurjeet Singh was the chief guest on the occasion along with MLA Sushil Rinku. —TNS
