Nearly 250 students of various courses were awarded degrees during the annual convocation-cum-alumni meet of GNA University in Phagwara on Saturday. Gurloveleen Singh Sidhu, Deputy Commissioner, Kapurthala was the chief guest on the occasion. University Chancellor Gursharan Singh presided over the ceremony while Pro Chancellor Gurdeep Singh Sihra, Vice Chancellor Prem Kumar, Director SK Singla and Registrar Sunil Sarad were the guests of honour. The chief guest honoured 15 toppers of various academic programmes while 250 students were awarded with MBA, M.Sc IT, BBA, B.Com, HMCT and BAMT degrees. Gurloveleen Singh Sidhu wished the students success in their career. He also recommended youth to stay away from drugs, see dreams and work hard to fulfill them as there was is substitute to hard work.

Workshop on communication skills

A two-day workshop on communication skills concluded at the department of journalism and mass communication, GNDU regional campus, Ladhewali, on Friday. The resource person for the first day was Inderjit Singh Paintal, writer and media person. He stressed on the need of meditation and introspection to get rid of the barriers within, which affect the ability to communicate. Students were given exercises in creative and journalistic writing. The first session of the second day was addressed by GL Tickoo, a retired academician. He interacted with students on how to improve language and pronunciation. He recommended them various books, journals and audio-video material. In the second session, Deepak Bali, an eminent media person from Punjab Jagriti Manch, emphasised on the need to be more expressive and observant in life to improve one’s communication skills. Earlier, while welcoming the guest, Dr Namarta Joshi, Head of the Department, talked about the degenerating standards of reading and writing among the younger generation. Prof Kamlesh Singh Duggal, Dr Charan Kamal Walia, Savita Dhamija, Shopita Khurana and Rama Shankar were also present on the occasion.

Enlightenment-2017

Under the aegis of Buddhist study centre of the Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar, the departments of history, political science and philosophy are celebrating ‘Enlightenment-2017’ which is a seven-day endeavour highlighting the relevance of teachings of Lord Buddha in the contemporary world. It is aimed at propagating amongst youth the Buddhist philosophy and its relevance in modern times. ‘Enlightenment-2017’ will comprise of various activities like meditation session, seminar, guest lectures and poster-making competitions. A panel discussion on “Buddhist philosophy in contemporary world” was organised in which students participated enthusiastically. Principal Dr. Sucharita Sharma lauded the efforts of Vishaw Bandhu Verma, in charge, Buddhist study centre and Head of history department for successfully conducting the session. The judges of this panel discussion were Principal Sucharita Sharma, Kusum Arora and Dr Anjana. The winners were awarded certificates.

Kho-Kho competition

The MGN College of Education, Jalandhar, organised kho-kho competitions under its health club wherein six teams participated from B.Ed classes. In the finals, the first position was held by ‘Section-C Sem-IV’ team while the second and third positions were held by ‘Sec-B Sem-II’ and ‘Section A/B Sem-IV’ teams, respectively. Principal Neelu Jhanji honoured the winning teams. She appreciated the efforts of all participating students. The competitions were organised under the supervision of Gaganpreet Kaur and Taranpreet Kaur. —TNS
