I-Day celebrated with zeal in Phagwara

PHAGWARA: Independence Day was celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm in Phagwara, Goraya, Phillaur, Noormahal and Nakodar on Tuesday, but politics dominated the celebrations at most places.

Independence Day was celebrated with great fervour and enthusiasm in Phagwara, Goraya, Phillaur, Noormahal and Nakodar on Tuesday, but politics dominated the celebrations at most places.

In Phagwara, Independence Day celebrations were politicised by leaders belonging to different political parties. SDM, Phagwara, Jyoti Bala unfurled the National Flag at a colourful function held at Government High School, but only politicians belonging to the ruling Congress party attended the function.

No politician belonging to SAD, BJP, AAP or any other political party attended the official function on Tuesday. Chaos was created by the Congressmen vying for a seat on the stage. Former minister Joginder Singh Maan, Superintendent of Police Parminder Singh Bhandal, judicial magistrate Rajwant Kaur, Monika Chauhan and Vaneeta Kumari also attended the function. Mayor Arun Khosla hoisted the national Flag at the MC office premises. Municipal Commissioner Davinder Singh, Assistant Municipal Commissioner Surjit Singh, besides several councillors, were also present on the occasion.

Independence Day functions were organised by different political, social and religious organisations at various educational institutions.

Phillaur: Director, Punjab Police Academy, Kuldip Singh unfurled the national flag on Independence Day at a function held in Phillaur on Tuesday. SDM Varinderpal Singh Bajwa hoisted the national flag at an official function held at Government High School in Phillaur. DSP Gurmit Singh Cheema was also present on the occasion.
