Jalandhar, March 25

Demanding police action against assailants who attacked a woman of Bakhunangal, members of Pendu Mazdoor Union today held a protest demonstration.

The union has decided to take up the matter with the Senior Superintendent of Police and the Deputy Commissioner. Addressing the gathering, PMU leaders claimed that before the election, the Congress leadership had assured landless labourers plots to build their houses but after the election landlord communities in villages have started to oppress them again.

They said a Dalit woman in Bakhunangal was attacked on the intervening night of March 20 and 21. Even when the matter was brought to the notice of the police, no action has been taken so far.

Members of the union have threatened to intensify their struggle if the police failed to register a case under the SC/ST Act. The leaders who addressed the gathering included Kashmir Singh Ghugshor, Balwinder Kaur and Paramjit Miko.
