Jalandhar, March 26
Despite the tragic death of 23-year-old sub-inspector Jagdeep Kaur in a road accident on the Chunmun mall intersection on Saturday, the Municipal Corporation of Jalandhar and the Traffic Police do not seem to have learnt any lessons from it.
The traffic apparatus remains in a neglected state, with a majority of the traffic lights on the ill-fated road remaining hidden under overgrown trees along with signboards.
More surprisingly, despite a visit by senior police officials and MC officials to the place after the incident, the traffic lights on the spot remained hidden behind trees. This is despite the city having been selected for the smart city mission project a few months ago.
ACP (Traffic) Digvijay Kapil said the department was soon going to take up the matter with the MC and would ensure the cutting and pruning of trees grown on the major city roads. Also, the department was contemplating to increase the shift of the traffic cops by one hour in the morning. “We have begun a survey to synchronise the timings of the traffic lights, their functioning and their upkeep to further streamline the traffic in the city,” said Kapil.
