The Municipal Corporation (MC) issued a notice to the Punjab Roadways today and told it to pay the remaining arrears of the property and house tax amounting to Rs 5.5 crore.

Mayor Sunil Jyoti said a case pertaining to this was going on in the Supreme Court where the Punjab Roadways had argued that since the bus stand was given on contract to a private company, the company should be asked to pay the property tax.

However, the court refused to take the claim made by the Punjab Roadways and asked it to pay the amount at the earliest.

Meanwhile, the roadways claimed that the civic body had made a wrong assessment of the property and, hence, would get its dues after an assessment was done.

Refuting their claim, Mayor Sunil Jyoti said enough time was given to the department to pay the arrears, but now the civic body would seal the bus stand if the due arrears were not paid on time.

He said that anticipating the inconvenience that would be caused to the general public, the civic body was delaying the sealing for the past few months, but in the absence of paying arrears by the roadways authorities, the MC was left with no option but to seal the property at the earliest.
