National Science Day

Students from various educational institutions participated in National Science Day celebrations at Lyallpur Khalsa College. The programme was organised in collaboration with the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh. The event included a seminar on science and its significance, in addition to competitions in the categories of poster making, model making, power point presentations and quiz. Welcoming guests and participants, Principal Dr GS Samra said scientific research was the need of the hour. In his address, chief guest Dr TS Benipal, Director, Research, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, said the government had a positive approach towards science, but still no significant research was taking place in this domain. He urged educational institutions to play an active role in this regard. Chief speaker Dr Anupam Kaur, Head, Department of Human Genetics, Guru Nanak Dev University, informed students about the latest developments in science and technology. The vote of the thanks was presented by Dr Balwinder Singh Chahal, Head of the physics department of the college.

Prizes won

Students of the Kamla Nehru College for Women, Phagwara, secured various prizes in ‘Punjaban Muttiyar Di Chaun’ contest held during the 20th Hamdard Virasati Mela organised by Punjabi Sabhyachar Pirh Punjab, Kapurthala. Students of the Department of Punjabi participated in the contest. Avneet Kaur secured the third position and was awarded a certificate, memento and a cash prize of Rs 2,100. Meanwhile, Monika secured ‘Sohna Hassa’, Manisha won ‘Dhaun Surahi Vargi’, Sukhman Kaur won ‘Sohna Shringar’ and Vishali won ‘Saru Varga Kad’ titles during the event. Principal of the college Dr Kiran Walia congratulated the winners.

Inter-college contests

The Ramgarhia College of Education grabbed the overall trophy at the inter-college competitions organised by the Guru Nanak College of Education for Women, Kapurthala, on the eve of college’s golden jubilee celebrations. In the teaching aids preparation competition, Manpreet Kainth won the first prize in math, Ravinder Kaur stood second prize in the teaching of Punjabi while in Fine Arts, Parveen won the first prize in best out of waste, Ravinder Kaur was second in pot making and Sapna and Gagandeep Kaur won the consolation prize in collage making and slogan writing. In Music, Sandeep Bangar was first while in poetical symposium, Damanjit Kaur won the first prize. Colleges affiliated with the Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar participated in the competitions. Principal Dr Surinderjit Kaur and  Manpreet Kaur Bhogal, president, Ramgarhia Educational Council, congratulated the winners, staff members and students for their hard work.

Workshop on entrepreneurship

The Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar, in collaboration with IIT Kharagpur and Make Intern has organised a five-day workshop on entrepreneurship. Kartik Mehra, entrepreneurship trainer of IIMs and IITs was the resource person. As many as 35 students of the college have enthusiastically participated in the venture out which five best students will represent Apeejay at IIT Kharagpur. Principal Dr Sucharita boosted the confidence of students and appreciated the efforts of Dr Monica Mogla and Dr Manisha Sharma from the department of commerce.

High scores

Students of Kanya Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar, Gagandeep Kaur and Navjot Kaur scored 86 out of 100 marks and secured the first position in the recent declaration of the results of Semester IV in History Honours of in Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. Rajwant followed with a score of 84 and was placed second in the same merit list while Sukhwinder scored 83 to get the third position while Rupinder scored 82 out of 100 marks to get the fourth position in the university. Principal Prof Atima Sharma Dwivedi congratulated the students. —TNS
