Phagwara
The police on Tuesday impounded a Tempo Traveller and recovered 850 gms of poppy husk from Mandip Singh of nearby Kherra village. The arrest was made at a naka organised to check violation of election rules at Hadiabad Chowk. Returning Officer-cum-Phagwara SDM Balbir Raj Singh has instructed the police machinery to accelerate its campaign against violators to ensure smooth and fearless polling.
Herbal kitchen garden
The faculty of hospitality, GNA University, has set up a herbal kitchen garden on the university premises on the commencement of spring semester. Dr Prem Kumar, Vice Chancellor, GNA University inaugurated it and dedicated it to students. Varinder Singh Rana, deputy dean, faculty of hospitality said the faculty was planning to cultivate seasonal vegetables and herbs in the first step followed by nurturing a micro-herb garden. Pro Chancellor Gurdeep Singh Sihra praised the efforts of the department and chef Ashish Raina, for setting up the garden. —OC

Bringing home another moment of pride, students of Sanskrit KMV School participated in the 10th Sub Junior National Amateur Soft Tennis Championship (boys and girls), organised by National Soft Tennis Federation of India at Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Representing Punjab, a team of seven students lead by the school coach, participated in a series of matches from January 4 to 8. In the boys category, Pulkit Gupta, Ashish Jha, Yash Vaish and in the girls category Muskaan Dadra, Mehak Dadra, Bhavya Singla and Damanpreet Kaur participated in singles, doubles and mixed group. Principal Rachna Monga welcomed and congratulated the team, parents, and the department for the achievement. —TNS
