Jalandhar, February 17

On the call of the Talmel Front of various organisations of Punjab against black laws, over five dozen farm and labour activist groups held a huge rally here today.

The rally was held against the Punjab government in protest against several black laws. People from Majha and Doaba participated in the rally.

Addressing the rally, the speakers said the previous Akali-BJP government did not implement the Punjab Prevention of Damage to Public and Private Property Act due to intense opposition from people. On the other hand, the present government which had been opposing the said Act in the first place, implemented the Act after coming to power, thus revealing their true ‘anti-people’ intent.

They said by filing cases as per Sections 283, 341, 188 and 149 of this Act against the activists of the state’s seven farmer organisations, the state government formally began to implement the law.

They also said by misusing Section 144 and determining places of dharnas and protest in cities like Jalandhar, Ludhiana, among other cities, was also a bid by the state government

to misuse the ‘black laws’. They said the country’s property is in peril not because of the people but the government.

They said while the taxes imposed on people were filling state coffers, the public entities, which include schools, electricity units, hospitals, air services, roads, railways, banks, lands, forests and underground resources were being sold to foreign companies at almost give-away prices causing huge losses to the public.

He said crores of rupees were being squandered in frauds by Modis, Mallyas, Ambanis and Adanis.

Activists said on top of it, rather than cracking down on gangsters, the Punjab government is bringing in a new black law called “Punjab Control of Organised Crime Act’ (PCOCA) which shall eventually be used to target the organisations protesting against injustice and atrocities.

They called for a united front and struggle by farmers’ groups against the Punjab Prevention of Damage to Public and Private Property Act, PCOCA, dismissal of the revision of Section 295 A of the CrPC and the misuse of the Sections 144, 107, 51 and 307.

Activists of the pendu Mazdoor union, Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union, Krantikari Pendu Mazdoor Union, Dehati Mazdoor Sabha, pendu mazdoor Union (mashal), Mazdoor Mukti Morcha, among others were present on the occasion.
