Ahead of the 71st Independence Day, the city railway station has turned into a fortress. Extra check posts have been set up in and outside the station to ensure the safe environment for passengers.

Security personnel are keeping a close eye on the activities of passengers at the railway station to avoid any untoward incidents on Independence Day.

Besides conducting combing operations, RPF officials have enhanced patrolling. Officers have been asked to keep records of visitors and verify their identity for the safety purpose.

“As many as 16 cameras have been installed at the railway station, which cover all platforms and the yard area. Two cameras each have been installed at the entry and exit points, outside and inside the station. The waiting room, parcel office and some stalls at the station are also under constant surveillance through CCTV cameras,” RPF officials said.

As per the information provided by the officials, the Punjab Police proposed to install CCTV cameras at all railway stations of the state. Last year, these were installed at the Amritsar and Ludhiana railway stations.

In Jalandhar, the project to install CCTV cameras got delayed due to some reasons. With festivals— Independence Day, Dussehra and Diwali — drawing near, the cameras have been installed to keep a vigil on the activities of anti-social elements.

“Tight security is already in place. Extra police personnel have been deployed to ensure that no untoward incident occurs. We are not taking anything for granted. We have asked the officials on duty to keep an eye on every suspicious element,” the RPF officials added.
