Singers, poets mark celebrations

JALANDHAR: On the occasion of International Mother Language Day today, the Punjab Jagriti Manch, in collaboration with Sarbat Da Bhala Trust, held a procession in the city which concluded at the Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall with renowned personalities performing to celebrate the mother tongue.

On the occasion of International Mother Language Day today, the Punjab Jagriti Manch, in collaboration with Sarbat Da Bhala Trust, held a procession in the city which concluded at the Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall with renowned personalities performing to celebrate the mother tongue.

The purpose of the procession was to let the people know about the importance of the mother language. The organisation also passed nine resolutions relating to the promotion of the language.

Reputed Punjabi poets Surjit Patar, Sukhwinder Amrit and writer Waryam Singh Sandhu took part in the event. Punjabi singers Nooran Sisters, Manmohan Waris, Malkiat Singh and Ranjit Bawa were the key performers of the day. The event was witnessed by thousands of people at Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall.

Students and teachers from various schools of the city also participated in the procession. The major demand of the organisations was to get the Punjabi language implemented in educational, legislative, executive, legal and business sectors.

Famous Punjabi poet Surjit Patar said such programmes were very essential to raise awareness among the people about due respect to the mother language. Sukhwinder Amrit also appreciated the efforts for promotion of the language.

The Punjab Jagriti Manch demanded that a stern policy on issues relating to education, Punjabi language and culture be formed. The organisation also called upon the people of Punjab to speak and write in Punjabi in their routine life.
