Teachers of the AIE/EGS/STR Union have sought the fulfillment of their promises regarding “equal work equal pay” as well as regularisation.

They have asked the Congress government, led by Captain Amarinder Singh, to fulfil the promises made to the teachers ahead of the elections.

The EGS/AIE/STR teachers of Punjab have been making do with Rs 166 in daily wages and making ends meet with much difficulty. This was stated by Kiranjit Kaur of the EGS/AIE/STR Teachers Union state president Devinder Singh Muktsar, senior leader Gurcharan Singh Tarn Taran, Satinder Singh Kang Tarn Taran, district president Harpreet Kaur Jalandhar, Rohit Patiala, Mitthu Khan Patiala, Avtar Singh Faridkot and other activists of the union in a joint statement.

Leaders said the teachers were teaching in various primary schools of Punjab since 2003 and despite being qualified, the government was paying them merely Rs 5,000 in salaries per month, which too was being released after a gap of six to eight months.

The leaders said as many as 7,813 teachers of the union were leading a very difficult life. He said Amarinder Singh had promised before elections to these teachers that on the formation of the Congress government, their problems and issues shall be solved on a priority basis.

They said the leader had also promised that teachers would get their requisite respect in society.

They said the people of Punjab had given a big responsibility to the Congress government by rejecting the government formed by the Kali-BJP combine. They sought from the Congress government to resolve the issues which were troubling the teachers of the state as per the promises made by the party before the elections. While asking for “equal work equal pay”, the teachers also asked for the government to fulfill their promise of regularisation.
