Ludhiana: High drama was witnessed at a promotional event for the upcoming Punjabi film, “Rocky Mental”, in SCD Government College as fans broke the barricades to get selfies clicked with lead actor Parmish Verma after his performance. The actor had to seek police protection from the nearby police station for some time. Some of the fans kept clicking selfies with the actor even at the police station. TNS

15-yr jail for possessing opium

Ludhiana: dditional Sessions Judge Avtar Singh Barda has convicted Rajwinder Singh of Araicha village, Doraha road, on charges of illegally possessing a huge quantity of opium. He has been sentenced to 15-year imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh. The accused was found in possession of 9-kg opium. The police arrested Rajwinder, who was in a car, on the Doraha-Machhiwara road with the contraband. OC

Freedom fighters’ kin meet at Circuit House

Ludhiana: Members of Freedom Fighters and Successors' Organisation held a meeting at the Circuit House here on Sunday. They asked the government to extend benefits to the next generation of freedom fighters, as the families and children of freedom fighters had to go through a very tough life. "Many of us had to live without our fathers by our side because they struggled, went to jails and had to face many ordeals and many also laid down their lives for the country. But their families and children also had to suffer a great deal because many of us were not looked after and had to endure extreme poverty," said Ravinder Kapoor, district president of the organisation. Social activists vow to use indigenous products

Mandi Ahmedgarh: Office-bearers and activists of various organisations have vowed to use indigenous products. The oath was taken in response to an appeal made by Jain Sadhvi Yasha Jyoti Ji during the concluding session of the 134th birth anniversary celebrations of Sadhvi Mathura Devi Ji Maharaj at Jain Sathanak Gandhi Nagar area here. The programme was organised by the SS Jain Sabha, Ahmedgarh. OC 

Man held for inveigling minor 

The PAU police have arrested a man for inveigling a minor girl. He was about to take her to his native place in Nepal before he was arrested at the police station. He was married, but inveigled the minor girl from Green Enclave area into elopement on the pretext of getting married with her. The accused has been identified as Sanjay Bahadur, who was currently residing in South City area.

ATM fraud: Rs 72k withdrawn 

Ludhiana: Yet another resident became a victim of ATM fraud as Rs 72,900 were withdrawn from his bank account. Shamsher Singh (40), who resides at a vehra in Ranjit Nagar, told the police that he was trying to withdraw money from an ATM at Focal Point area but was not successful. He said an unidentified person offered to help. He took his ATM card and withdrew Rs 3,000 from the ATM, but surreptitiously changed the ATM card. He then withdrew Rs 12,000, Rs 24,500, Rs 11,400, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 on different dates. The Focal Point police have booked an unidentified person under Section 420 of the IPC for cheating.

AAP volunteers meet

A meeting of the Aam Aadmi Party volunteers of Atam Nagar and Ludhiana West Constituencies was held at Matharu Complex on Sunday to mobilise maximum number of people for Issru Shaheedi conference. AAP State General Secretary Ahbaab Singh Grewal exhorted them to mobilise maximum numbers of people to make Issru rally a grand success. He said a huge gathering at AAP Baba Bakala rally had boosted the morale of volunteers in the entire state and Issru conference on the Martyrdom day of Shaheed Master Karnail Singh Issru will be an eye opener for the other parties.
